Resources

Malawi is endowed with vast mineral resources, many of which are essential to modern industries, including renewable energy, electronics, and construction. The country’s mineral wealth presents significant opportunities for investment and economic growth

Key Mineral Elements

GOLD

Malawi is formalizing its gold sector, transitioning from informal artisanal activity to a regulated pillar of the national economy.

  • Deposits are concentrated in the Lisungwe Valley (Neno), Mangochi, Lilongwe (Nathenje), and Kasungu.

Gold is critical for high-end electronics and AI computing hardware due to its conductivity. It is also essential for aerospace components and as a global financial reserve

Rutile and Graphite

The Kasiya deposit is a world-class resource that positions Malawi as a future leader in the global supply chain for both rutile and graphite.

  • Rutile: Primarily found in the Tengani and Kasiya projects, this mineral is a high-grade source of titanium. It is essential for producing titanium dioxide pigments, which provide the brightness and durability found in paints, plastics, and paper.
  • Graphite: Co-located in areas like Kasiya, graphite is a critical component for the anodes of lithium-ion batteries. As the world shifts toward electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage, Malawi’s high-quality graphite is expected to meet the soaring demand for green technology.
Uranium

Malawi is re-emerging as a significant global supplier, with major production recently restarting to meet the “nuclear renaissance.”

  • Primarily centered in the Karonga District (Kayelekera), with additional potential in Chitipa and Mzimba.

It is increasingly vital for carbon-free baseload energy, powering AI data centers, and fueling next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Bauxite and Aluminum

Deposits found in Mulanje Mountain could support the production of aluminum, a critical material in construction and transportation

  • The primary deposits are concentrated on the Mulanje Massif. These high-altitude deposits were formed from the weathering of the mountain’s unique syeno-granitic rocks.

Bauxite is the essential raw material for producing alumina, which is then smelted into aluminum. This metal is critical for construction and transportation industries. It is also increasingly vital for solar panel frames and electric vehicle (EV) components due to its lightweight and recyclable nature

Niobium and Tantalum

Malawi is home to one of the largest multi-element deposits in Africa, positioning the country as a critical alternative to traditional global supply chains for these “sister metals.”

  • Significant deposits are concentrated in the Mzimba District (specifically the Kanyika region) and the Chitipa District (Ilomba Hill).

Niobium is essential for creating High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) steel, used in jet engines, bridge construction, and automotive frames. It is also an emerging material for fast-charging battery anodes.

Tantalum is vital for high-performance capacitors in smartphones, laptops, and medical implants due to its extreme heat resistance and energy storage efficiency

Coal and Energy Minerals

Malawi maintains significant coal reserves that serve as a bridge for industrial growth while the country transitions toward a more diverse energy mix.

  • Primary high-quality bituminous coalfields are located in the Northern Region (Livingstonia, Ngana, and Mchenga) and the Southern Region (Mwabvi and Lengwe).

It is a critical fuel for industrial processes, including tobacco curing, cement manufacturing, and textile production. It is also a key component for baseload power generation to stabilize the national grid during peak demand

Projects

MAMICO is currently overseeing a diverse portfolio of upcoming ventures designed to redefine Malawi’s role in the global mineral economy. Our pipeline is built on three strategic pillars: Discovery, Development, and Domestication.

01

Strategic Exploration & Resource Validation

We are spearheading initiatives to transition Malawi from "potential" to "proven." By leveraging advanced geological data, our upcoming exploration projects aim to map and quantify high-demand mineral deposits across the country, providing a solid foundation for future large-scale investment.

  • Focus: Critical minerals essential for the global energy transition.

  • Goal: Building a robust, data-driven national inventory of mineral wealth.

02

Mineral Value Addition & In-Country Processing

In line with national industrialization goals, our next phase of projects moves beyond extraction. MAMICO is facilitating joint ventures focused on local beneficiation—ensuring that raw minerals are processed within Malawi before export.

  • Focus: Establishing local processing hubs and refineries.

  • Goal: Retaining maximum economic value and creating high-skilled industrial jobs

03

04

Sustainable Mining & Infrastructure Integration

Future projects are being designed with a "landscape approach," where mining serves as a catalyst for broader infrastructure development. This includes integrating renewable energy solutions and modern transport logistics into project sites to minimize environmental impact and benefit host communities.

  • Focus: Green mining technologies and shared-use infrastructure.

  • Goal: Promoting long-term regional development that outlives the life of the mine

EcoPower Transformation Initiative

Facing challenges of high energy costs and a substantial carbon footprint, our client sought to revolutionize its energy practices. Working hand-in-hand with Eco-Con's expert team, we implemented renewable energy solutions, incorporating solar and wind power into their operations. This resulted in a significant reduction in reliance on non-renewable sources, translating to both environmental benefits and substantial cost savings. Discover how this initiative became a beacon of sustainable excellence and an inspiration for businesses worldwide.
